INDIANAPOLIS,
IN (May 25, 2012) -- Jerry Coons, Jr. dominated Friday night's 59th running of
the USAC "Hoosier Hundred" at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The
Tucson, AZ driver led 87 of 100 race laps en route to the win.
While the USAC Silver Crown Series competes
exclusively on Hoosier tires when racing on pavement, they allow use of any
tire brand when the series races on dirt.
Under extremely hot conditions, Coons opted to
run Hoosier's F85 as his right rear tire compound, while the second, third and fourth
place finishers used the harder F95 compound.
In addition to claiming the top four spots,
Hoosier-shod cars laid claim to eight of the top ten spots in the night's
feature race. In fact, the Hoosier brand was the choice of 15 of the 22 cars
trying to make the feature race.
Bryan Clauson was the fastest qualifier for the
event. Riding on Hoosier tires, Clauson captured the top spot with a time of
34.768 seconds around the 1-mile oval. Clauson would go on to compete in the
Indianapolis 500 two days later finishing in 30th place.
Coons led the final 87 circuits, while Tracy
Hines was the only other race leader during the 100-lap race. Hines, also
running on Hoosiers, led the first 13 laps before giving way to Coons who led
the remainder of the distance to capture back-to-back wins in the prestigious
event.
Coons commented after the win, "Winning
this race just once and joining that list of names, that was a huge deal in
itself. To come back and join the group of guys who have won it more than once,
and won it back-to-back, it's just amazing."
Finishing in second place was Bud Kaeding
followed by Levi Jones and Bobby East in third and fourth, respectively.
Hoosier's Open Wheel Oval Track Dirt Product
Manager Neil Cowman attended the event to assist the various teams competing on
Hoosier tires.
Cowman stated, "I was very pleased with the
way the Hoosier tires performed. The track was well prepared by Bob Sargent and
his crew."
Cowman added, "I want to thank all the
competitors who chose to run Hoosier tires and also recognize the great service
provided by Hoosier Tire Midwest."
