PORTSMOUTH,
OH (October 20, 2012) -- The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series concluded its
2012 season this past weekend at Carl
Short’s 2012 Dirt Track World Championship at Portsmouth Raceway Park.
Jimmy
Owens led 99 of 100 race laps en route to claiming the $50,000 top prize while
riding on Hoosier tires. Owens
had already
wrapped up the 2012 Lucas Oil Late
Model Dirt Series championship but wanted to end the season in grand fashion
with his seventh win of the season.
The
$50,000-to-win event attracted 94 of the country's best late model dirt drivers
with 78
of them opting to ride on Hoosier tires.
Scott
Bloomquist and Jimmy Owens led the purple parade by setting fast time in
qualifying in their respective groups using Hoosier’s 1300 compound.
All
six heat races and all three B-mains were captured by Hoosier-shod drivers
including Delmas Conley who was the most veteran driver in the field at
70-years-young.
When
the preliminary racing was over, all
24 cars that raced their way into the 100-lap main event did so on Hoosier
tires.
Scott
Bloomquist led the feature's first lap before giving way to the 40-year-old
Jimmy Owens who started the race alongside Bloomquist in the front row.
Owens
would defend the top spot for the next 99 circuits to claim the $50,000 top
prize using a Hoosier 1425 left-rear, 1600 right-rear combination. Owens
stated after the race, "I have to thank my crew. We went with the right
tire choice. The Cornett Engine ran strong and our goal was to win this race
one day and we got it done." Bloomquist
finished in second place followed by last year's winner, Don O'Neal, in
third. O'Neal
was followed by Josh Richards and local favorite Ben
Adkins to round out the list of top five finishers.
Hoosier Late Model Dirt Product Manager Shanon
Rush attended the event and commented after the race, "The
tremendous history of this event always makes it an important one to win and we
are very pleased Jimmy not only claimed today's win on Hoosiers but also the
series championship." Rush
added, "We would also like to thank the strong contingent of UMP modified
customers who supported the Hoosier brand during the 2012 Dirt
Track World Championship." For
